How to Properly Dispose of Grease

Grease

As the leaves continue to fall outside, we are reminded that the holidays are right around the corner! This holiday season, you might find yourself in the kitchen with family and friends frying turkey, cooking a seasonal casserole, or baking your favorite holiday treats. As you’re spending all this time in the kitchen, you might find yourself with an exorbitant amount of grease to dispose of. Before you pour your grease down the kitchen sink, remember “out of sight” doesn’t always mean “out of mind”. Even the tiniest amount of grease down your pipes can build up and cause costly backups - which is the last thing you want to pay for during the upcoming holiday season!

People spend billions of dollars a year unclogging or replacing grease-filled pipes. While it is a completely avoidable problem, it is easily one of the most common issues for homeowners with septic issues. At FJ Rabon, we’ve seen the same issue time and time again—grease lined pipes wreaking havoc on your septic system. How can this be avoided?

First of all, understand that you should never pour grease down the drain. It doesn’t matter if it’s mixed with hot water, dish soap, or cooled to room temperature. Regardless of the mixture in which it is poured or the consistency of the grease, by the time it settles in your pipes it will harden and stick to the walls of your septic system.

Over time, this will continually build up and slow down your system until it is completely clogged. Grease in the drain is never a good idea. So, how should you properly dispose of grease to avoid septic problems this season?

Don’t dump it in your yard. This isn’t good for the environment or the animals that live outside. It certainly isn’t healthy for your lawn. Instead, consider using an empty container, like an old can, for grease storage. Simply pour your used grease into the can each time you cook, and once it is full and solidified, dispose of it in your regular trash bin. Then, before rinsing your dishes, make sure to wipe down all of your pots and pans with a paper towel or disposable rag to ensure grease doesn’t make its way down your drain.

By altering your habits to follow these simple steps, you can ensure that your system stays safe from the harmful effects of grease for years to come!
