How to Keep Your Septic System Running Smoothly

Are you a homeowner with a septic system? If so, you probably understand that proper maintenance and care are crucial to keep your septic system functioning effectively. Unfortunately, there are many mistakes that homeowners can make that prevent their septic system from operating smoothly. Don’t worry - here at FJ Rabon Construction, we’re experts when it comes to septic systems. In this blog, we’ll outline a few things you need to know to keep your septic system running smoothly. Read on to learn how you can ensure your septic system operates efficiently for years to come!

The Do's and Don'ts of Flushing:

Let’s face it: most people don’t give their septic system a second thought until there’s a problem with it. By then, it’s often too late. One of the most important things you can do to keep your septic system functioning properly is to watch what you flush down your drains.

It goes without saying that toilet paper and wastewater are the only things that should be flushed. Toilet paper breaks down fairly quickly within the septic system and doesn’t have added chemicals that can potentially damage a tank. Using biodegradable toilet paper is even better, because it uses less water when dissolving within the system.

Did you know that even seemingly harmless items like paper towels, feminine hygiene products, “flushable” wipes, and diapers can wreak havoc on your system? Unlike toilet paper, these items are made of synthetic materials and are not designed to break down when flushed. Instead, they expand and clog your system - potentially causing costly damage.

Fortunately, there’s an easy solution. Stick to only flushing toilet paper and wastewater down your toilet, and encourage your family members and guests to do the same. Make sure there is a trashcan available in the bathroom to discourage your family and friends from flushing harmful products into your septic system.

Garbage Disposal Use:

You can’t beat the convenience of a kitchen garbage disposal. It’s a great way to dispose of food waste and keep odors out of your trash can. However, not everything you are tempted to flush down your garbage disposal is suitable for your septic system.

Certain foods like pasta or rice can expand in your pipes and cause clogging. Grease, while it may be liquid when you pour it down the drain, quickly cools down and solidifies inside your pipes - leading to more clogs inside your pipes. (Learn how to properly dispose of grease by clicking here!)

While some foods won’t necessarily cause a blockage, foods like meat and leftover table scraps are still unable to break down inside your septic tank. It’s best to play it safe and keep food out of your garbage disposal. On the other hand, some biodegradable items like ice cubes, fruit without the peel, and soft vegetables are perfectly safe to dispose of down the drain. Be mindful of what you put down your garbage disposal so you can avoid clogs and costly repairs.

Use of Additives:

When using additives for septic system maintenance, it is important to be informed on which additive to use and how it works. Here at FJ Rabon Construction, we stand behind Bio-Tab. Learn more about Bio-Tab and how it works by clicking here. However, there are additives that aren't good for your septic system. Some additives contain acids and alkalis that are not good for system pipes and can cause corrosion and leaks in your septic tank. It is important to do research on additives to ensure you’re not harming your system.

Regular Maintenance:

One of the most important ways to keep your septic system running smoothly is to stay on top of your regular pumping and maintenance. At FJ Rabon Construction, we recommend having your system pumped every 3-5 years depending on your household usage and the size of your tank. Avoid septic system buildup and costly repairs by scheduling your service regularly!
